Slate Cummings Claims Third Consecutive Stock Victory

Slate Cummings earned his third consecutive NHRA LODRS Stock Eliminator victory at last weekend’s Division 3 event at Mid-Michigan Motorplex.  Cummings was not behind the wheel of his familiar Moser Engineering backed Firebird, but rather the B/SA Corvette of good friend Nick Folk.  The victory moved Cummings into a commanding lead in the NHRA Division 4 Stock Eliminator standings, and into second place in the NHRA Lucas Oil National rankings.  Cummings also currently leads the Division 4 standings in Super Stock.

Following a fairly pedestrian start to his 2012 campaign, Slate Cummings caught fire at the LODRS event in Belle Rose, LA in early June.  The Belle Rose victory got momentum rolling for the Hammond, LA based contender, who has finished in the top 5 of NHRA’s Lucas Oil National standings in each of the last two seasons.  In late June, the Cummings Motorsports team made its way to Tulsa, OK, where Slate notched his second consecutive LODRS victory.  The team left Tulsa and headed straight for Chicagoland Speedway, where Cummings claimed victory in the prestigious JEGS All-Stars competition for a second consecutive season (his 2012 Stock title accompanies his 2011 Super Stock crown).  In the month since, the Moser Engineering team had been idle until Slate’s appearance in Michigan, where he earned his third consecutive LODRS victory, and his fourth Stock Eliminator title in as many events.

“We’ve definitely been on a roll,” said Cummings.  “I just want to thank Nick and the Folk Race Cars team for offering me the Corvette this weekend.  Flying up here and driving their car made a lot more sense than driving our rig from Louisiana to Michigan!  I also want to thank our major sponsor, Moser Engineering.  We didn’t have the Moser cars here this weekend, but Nick’s car is equipped with a full compliment of Moser Engineering components, and I’m happy that Rob and the Moser Engineering team were here to share the win with us.”

With his recent string of victories, Cummings finds himself in familiar territory: national championship contention.

“I don’t know if the championship is a realistic goal this season,” admitted Cummings.  “I’ve already got a points total that would win the championship in some seasons, but this year Brad Burton has been on an absolute tear.  I’m not sure anyone can catch him.  But we’ve still got plenty of races left, so you never know.  It’s going to take someone nearly running the table to catch him, but stranger things have happened.”
