MARCH RACER OF THE MONTH, The Boulware Family

by Tim Glover

racket racing is a family sport, and the Boulware family is one of many examples. Father Glen, and sons Kyle (28 years old) and Ron (34 years old) are all involved now with ultra-fast dragsters. Glen’s wife and Kyle and Rons’s mom, Lequite, supported and was very involved with the family’s racing until she passed away four years ago.

Glen Boulware began drag racing back in the late sixties, shortly after returning home from serving in Vietnam. Along with his brother, Don Boulware, he began racing at Green Valley Raceway near Dallas. Glen enjoyed racing at Green Valley, winning many races and enjoying back-to-back track championships in 1979-1980 in what we now call Super Pro class. Thanks to a "forward thinking" developer who bought the property and converted it into a house farm, Boulware had to look for other places to race. Since he didn’t have a home track any more, Boulware enjoyed a good bit of success racing at Temple Dragway, Little River and Kennedale. At that time he also decided to travel around racing. Some of Kyle’s early memories include traveling to different races in their motorhome. One of the cars Glen did well with during the early days was named Cheetah. He is trying to locate this car again to see if he can buy it, but has not had any success. After he sold Cheetah, he bought a Paul Peyton roadster, which he raced until 1987. He was involved again after a five year hiatus, but really didn’t get back into it heavily until 2002.

Kyle began his racing career in a ‘93 Cobra, and learned what can happen to a car that gets steadily flogged at the track. "I tore it up from racing," he added. One of his best weekends was at Lonestar Raceway in Texas, where he finished in the semis on Saturday and won Sunday during two $5K races. His final round opponent was Darrell Patton, who he had already beaten earlier. He has also won numerous races at Kennedale, finishing with a best of fourth in the Super Pro points and second in the Quick 32 series. He also finished runner up to Nick Folk in the Ray Miller Run for the Dragster race held during the 2002 Five Day race.

Ron is a recent convert to bracket racing. Dad Glen sold his entire racing operation in 1987 to help put Ron, who has always loved sports, through medical school. He was rewarded with his son becoming a doctor in sports medicine. Ron graduated Texas Tech in Lubboch, Texas, then went to Southwest Medical Center in San Antonio and finished his internship in Florida. His best race finishes so far are a top 32 in the Million at Rockingham and a couple of semi-final finishes at Bradenton.

Ron has the fastest car, a 555 cubic inch Scott Shafiroff BBC powered 2002 Mullis dragster. His best ET to date is a 7.37. Kyle comes in next, with a Glen Boulware built 565 BBC in a 2001 Worthy car. His best ET in that setup is 7.45, although he says he slows it to the 7.80s most of the time. Glen campaigns a 2001 Undercover dragster, which is powered by a 522 inch Reher Morrison BBC. His best run with this car is only 7.84. They all gave thanks to Worthy, Mullis and Undercover for all the help they received with their dragsters. Glen’s business, Gagle’s Auto Sales, is also a big supporter for the team.

The Boulware family originated in Texas, but they now call Florida home. Kyle said that was because on a trip to the Five Day race in 1998, they left a freezing Dallas, Texas and enjoyed a week of 70 degree weather in Florida. They didn’t go back.

After Glen and Kyle moved to Florida, Ron followed to finish his internship. Ron now works at Bayfront Medical Center. Dad Glen’s day job is owning and operating Gagle’s Auto Sales in Tampa. Kyle works for Price Waterhouse Cooper as a computer tech.

The Boulwares have not traveled a great amount previously, but their 2003 racing plans involve a full schedule on the road. They plan to attend the Super Tens series, the B&M Series, a few divisional and national events and several other races in between. Kyle added that if he does well in one of the points series, his attention will be focused on that series.

Beware the Boulwares in 2003!
