National Records Fall at MMP NHRA Nationals
Montgomery, AL

he All-Star collection of Stock Eliminator and Super Stock racers who descended on Montgomery Motorsports Park Friday and Saturday (11/28-29) came away with dozens of new national records in various classes. Racers came from as far away as Canada and California to take advantage of the crisp air which yielded so many national records at the inaugural NHRA Nationals in 2002.

A total of 36 racers apparently set new records, which should be verified this week by the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA). After the qualifying and national record setting on Friday, the field of MMP's NHRA Nationals settled down to racing on Saturday.

Joe Lo Cicero of Snellville Georgia took the Stock/Super Stock combined race over runner-up Gary Wisecarver of Rustburg, Va., who ended the race with a red-light foul. Lo Cicero took his GT/CA Super Stock 1988 Camaro to a 9.621-second 1/4 mile run on A 9.61-second dial t 136.42 miles per hour. Wisecarver ran a 9.745 on his 9.79-second dial at 137.61 miles per hour. Kenny Schindler of Hendersonville, Tennessee was the lone semi-finalist in his "Tennessee Thunder" 1968 Corvette.

Darryle Modesto of Ardmore, Oklahoma took the Super Comp title in his rear-engine dragster over Montgomery racer Hugh Meeks III. Modesto ran an 8.905 1/4 mile at 162.48 miles per hour. Meeks ran an 8.944-second ET at 161.34 miles per hour.

In the Super Gas finals, a pair of Forest Park, Georgia racers slugged it out. Tommy Smith ran his 1990 Corvette to a huge lead after Jeff Brown had problems with his 1993 Oldsmobile....but Smith reached the finish line much faster than the Super Gas 9.90-second index, so he lost the race. Smith's run was a blistering 9.558 blast at 146.79 miles per hour. Brown had to lift and coasted to a 19-second pass.

MMP begins a 3-race holiday series this Saturday (12/6-7) with the holiday special event, featuring a pair of $1,500 to win races for Super Pros, and two Footbrake races with $500 going to the winner. The series continues with the Hangover Nationals on January 3-4 and concludes with the Capitol City Classic January 31 and February 1.

Pre-entries are still open for the huge Fistful of Dollars event coming in early March. On Saturday, March 6, one racer will walk away with an incredible $100,000 winners purse. For more information on MMP racing, please call the track at (334) 260-9660 or go to the MMP web site at
