Young, Kight Win at Rock before Storm Halts
03/09/04
Rockingham, NC

ive champions were crowned in the first race in the 2004 Doug Herbert Performance Products Carolina Coalition Drag Racing Series before a freak winter storm blew down a light standard, took out several signs and forced officials to suspend competition at Rockingham Dragway.

According to Rockingham Dragway owner Steve Earwood, the two races which weren't completed because of the storm damage – one semifinal and the final round in Sunday's Top Eliminator event – will be contested in conjunction with the March 27-28 Carolina Coalition event at Piedmont Dragway.

James Young of Parsipanny, N.J., and Susan Kight of Lancaster, S.C., won the Sportsman and Trailers of the East Coast Jr. Dragster titles, respectively, and Brandon Hackworth of Lynch Station, Va., had earned one of the spots in the Top Eliminator final when 60 mile-an-hour winds hit the track Sunday.

Hackworth will race at Piedmont for the $5,000 top prize against either Doug Walker of Greensboro, N.C., or P.J. Strickland of Taylorsville, N.C.

Kight was particularly impressive in victory, using a .507 of a second starting line advantage to overcome the near perfect run turned in by Brian Adkins of Bluefield, West Va. (an 8.203 second run against an 8.200 target).

Saturday winners at The Rock were Ronnie Strange of Taylors, S.C., in Top Eliminator; Josh Barber of Sneads Ferry, N.C., in Sportsman; and Lauren Freer of Lewisville, N.C., in Jr. Dragster.

The Carolina Coalition Series, presented by RACETECH, Sunoco and Hank Thomas Peformance, is comprised of eight races, two each contested at Rockingham, Piedmont, Farmington Motor Sports Park and Mooresville Dragway.

Each Top Eliminator racer at Rockingham becomes eligible for a special year-end race for a ready-to-run RACETECH dragster with an Andy Beal engine and other top-of-the-line components.

In addition to more than $300,000 in purses, racers compete for points that will determine the distribution of more than $42,500 in year-end bonuses including $10,000 set aside for the Top Eliminator Champion.
