Gallant and Manzo come out on top at Cecil County

RISING SUN, Md. - NHRA Northeast Division competitors in eight categories took to the track today for the second day of racing at the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event being held this weekend at Cecil County Dragway.

In six of the eight categories being contested at the event, the opening rounds of competition was completed this evening after the conclusion of qualifying and time runs. In the remaining two categories, Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car, eliminations were completed tonight with former National Champions, Arthur Gallant and Frank Manzo sharing the winner’s circle after wins in their respective categories.

In Top Alcohol Dragster, Gallant of Boxboro, Mass., defeated No. 1 qualifier Richard Bourke of Old Tappen, N.J., to earn his second Northeast Division victory this year. In the final, Gallant laid down his fastest pass of the weekend, a 5.422 at 250.88 mph, to take out Bourke, who broke after making his burnout. This is the second final round win in a row for Gallant, who earlier this month was a winner at Maple Grove Raceway’s Lucas Oil Series event. By virtue of his victory today, Gallant also takes over the NHRA Northeast Division points lead.

Manzo earned back-to-back Cecil County Dragway wins when defeated David Ray in Ray’s second final round appearance of the year. En route to his final round meeting with Ray, Manzo eliminated Mickey Ferro in round one and Northeast Division points leader and longtime rival, Schenectady, N.Y., racer Bob Newberry in the semifinal round. In the final, Manzo ran 5.777 seconds at 252.61 mph to Ray’s 5.918 seconds pass at 241.93 to claim the win.

For Manzo, a win this weekend was a must in order to keep his divisional and national championship hopes alive. Today’s win marks Manzo’s second Lucas Oil Series win this year and third final round appearance. The win has also put Manzo in the division points lead.

In other racing action, competitors in Comp Eliminator, Super Stock and Stock Eliminator completed their final rounds of qualifying earlier in the day. The No. 1 spot in each category was earned by Gerry Russo of Saddle River, N.J., in Comp Eliminator, Dennis Steward of Dover, Pa., in Super Stock and James Klacik of Aliquippa, Pa., in Stock Eliminator.

Sunday’s racing action will feature the continuation of eliminations in Comp Eliminator, Super Stock, Stock Eliminator, Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street.

Gates at Cecil County Dragway open Sunday at 8 a.m. Final eliminations are set to continue at 9 a.m. General Admission tickets, including a pit pass, are $18 and include a pit pass. Children 11 and under are admitted free with a paid adult.  For more information please contact Cecil County Dragway at (410) 287-6280 or online at www.CecilCountyDragway.com.
